What does a landscaping company do in the winter?

Winter tree service arborist

Here in Northern Michigan, we’ve had a winter with cold temperatures and piles upon piles of snow. When it’s hard to remember there’s even ground underneath all that snow, it can leave you wondering: What does a landscaping company do in the winter?

While some of our teams won’t be back on site until spring, others continue to work year-round. So, what kind of landscaping work do we do all year long? We can’t speak for any other companies, but this blog post will cover what Team Drost does throughout the winter.

Tree Service

All year long, our Tree Service Team is out on sites performing tree trimming, tree removals, and qualified tree risk assessments. There are some significant advantages to completing tree work in the winter, like better access to and visibility of damaged or diseased branches, since there aren’t leaves blocking the view. Tree trimming in winter is also healthier for trees, as they can put more energy towards healing while they’re dormant and are less susceptible to pests and diseases. In fact, some trees, like oaks, can only be trimmed during the winter because of the risk of disease during warmer months.

Design & Build

Throughout the winter months, our Design & Build Team is still actively working on a number of different service offerings, including:

  • Design – Our landscape architects continue to perform site visits, meet with clients, and work on designs and revisions all year long.
  • Excavation – As long as conditions permit, our team performs excavation for new builds, foundations, septic system installs, and more.
  • Shoreline protection – Work on shoreline protection projects continues into and through the winter, even if the water freezes.
  • Hardscapes – Retaining walls, fire features, patios, walkways, water features, and outdoor kitchens are all elements that our team continues to work on year-round.

Snow Removal

Perhaps we’ve saved the most obvious for last… Our Snow Removal Team has been busy this winter as snow event has followed snow event. Serving both residential and commercial clients, we perform plowing, salting, sanding, brining, and shoveling depending on the client’s needs and requests. It’s a demanding job with unpredictable hours, and our team has gotten a lot of compliments on their work this year!

How winter work benefits you

By working year-round, our team is able to do more for our clients, helping them get the most out of their time up north. By taking snow removal off of their to-do list, they’ve got more time to actually enjoy the snow, rather than wishing it away. Performing tree services in winter can prevent costly damages from winter storms, and it prepares trees for a strong and healthy season of growth without disturbing our clients’ summer fun.

As for Design & Build, landscaping isn’t generally a quick process. By beginning in the winter with design work, permitting, excavation, and hardscaping, we’re giving our clients more time to enjoy their finished space once summer arrives. Working all winter long enables us to do more for our clients, so that our clients can do more of what they love.
