Organic Shorelines
Shoreline protection practices have evolved throughout the years, reflecting the current research on good shoreline practices. Seawalls are making way for more nature-inspired approaches that offer a stable foundation, aesthetic appeal, and environmental benefits. At Drost, we design and build organic shorelines, which are a combination of hardscaping and plantings that work together to protect the landscape. We take into account the energy action on the shoreline (from waves, ice buildup, etc.) and add hardscape materials as appropriate. A variety of plantings with different root structures help to further stabilize the soil, growing stronger over time. This combination of hardscaping and plantings creates an attractive view, protects the landscape from the devastating effects of erosion, and provides some habitat for beneficial wildlife while discouraging landscape pests like geese from taking over the nearby yard.
